TOTP Authenticator Apps
To generate a 6-digit code for two-factor login verification, you’ll need an app. Below is a list of apps you can use for this purpose—but if none of these suit you, there are plenty of other compatible options out there.
Info
TOTP is an abbreviation for Time-Based One-Time Password
FreeOTP
This app was developed by Red Hat and supports TOTP and HOTP. It can be protected with your phone’s biometric scanner or a pin code. Since this is an open source app, you don’t need any cloud based services. Available from Google Play, AppStore and F-Droid.
2FAS
Another free and open-source TOTP app with Face ID/Touch ID protection and optional cloud backup via iCloud.
Microsoft Authenticator
This is the recommended app for multi factor authentication for Microsoft 365. A user-friendly app that supports TOTP and push-based 2FA. Syncs with your Microsoft account and can back up codes to the cloud.
Google Authenticator
Similarly, the Google Authenticator is a widely used TOTP generator.
Other
If you don’t have an Android or Apple phone, the most secure alternative is to use a YubiKey. YubiKeys can be ordered at Conrad or Dustin.
